Hello! My name is Peter Binnie. I'm very excited to be the social worker at Wayzata West Middle School. This is my tenth year at West after previously working at a middle school in Libertyville, Illinois. I got my B.A. in Social Work at Hope College in Holland, Michigan and received my Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I feel so fortunate to be in this role at West! I am passionate about helping others, particularly middle school-aged students and their families! My interests include watching and playing lots of sports, biking, running, and hanging out with my wife and two sons.
As the social worker at West, I think I have an amazing job! This year, I am working with all of our sixth graders, any students receiving Special Education services, and students who are struggling with attendance. Any student is welcome to come see me in the Student Services office. If I am not able to meet at that time, either Mrs. Fortin (Student Services Secretary) or I will be happy to schedule an appointment to meet with me at a later time. I see students due to self-referral, parent referrals, and teacher referrals. Some students come to see me on an as-needed basis, while others have regular, standing appointments with me. I'm open to any of this!
I am very aware of how difficult a period of one's life the middle school years can be. If you have any social, emotional or academic concerns about your student(s), please feel free to call or email me! (You can also encourage them to come see me.) I am here to help and always appreciate it when parents/guardians contact me. Some of the things I help with include coping strategies for mental health struggles, friend difficulties, family struggles, academic concerns, bullying, organization/study skills, and planning for the future.
I am an easy-going guy who really strives to meet students where they're at. It is imperative to me that every student feels safe, comfortable, and supported here at West! I look forward to working with you and your student!
