WHS Math Team Takes Second in State Tournament

The Wayzata High School Math Team took second place in the State Math Tournament on March 10, 2014.
WHS junior Jenica Zhong tied with one other student for 2nd place in the overall regular season scoring title with 66 out of 70 possible points.
Freshman William Drew and senior William Zeng both participated in the “Math Bowl,” a head-to-head competition between the top 10 scorers in the invitational tournament.
The WHS team had more students invited to the invitational than any other team with 10 of the top 50 scorers in the state throughout the regular season. Coach Bill Skerbitz said the team went into the team event with a nine-point lead, but Edina won the championship by one point.
Prior to the tournament, the WHS team finished the regular season in first place with a cumulative score of 575, beating out their nearest competitors, Mounds View, Edina, and Eden Prairie, by 38, 42 and 64 points, respectively.
This year's varsity tournament team included seniors Apekshya Panda and William Zeng, juniors Leighton Zhao and Jenica Zhong, sophomores Se Ri Choi, Jeffrey Lee, and Daniel Qu, and freshman William Drew. Also qualifying to compete at the tournament but not on the varsity team were junior Orien Zeng and sophomore David Mo.
